A great place to see migrating gray whales is at one of our beautiful parks – Pigeon Point Light Station State Historic Park. And the best time to watch for whales is in the spring. The oceanside observation deck at the lighthouse allows whale watchers a 300 degree view as they scan the horizon for whale blows.
Docent volunteers are “on-deck” to help interpret these magnificent marine mammals and their behavior for visitors.
The peak of the gray whale watching season is typically April, but gray whales moving northward are often seen throughout May.
Beginning in March, after the northbound migration gets into full swing, Docents are stationed at the observation deck from Friday to Monday. The focus is on all marine mammal interpretation, but they are passionate about whales and sharing information with visitors.
Visit the light station and be sure to head out to the deck, you will find a very knowledgeable docent who has likely set up an interpretive display about gray whales. He or she will be very excited and happy to help you try to spot a whale.
To have the best chance of seeing a whale, we recommend that you plan to spend several hours at Pigeon Point, preferably on a day without strong winds. Dress warmly and bring a lunch, snacks, sunscreen and, of course, don’t forget your binoculars.
